Phones Are Killing Theme Park Immersion

A recent study conducted by Katapult in partnership wit Parkineer has revealed that 83% of theme park visitors visit with the motivation of escaping their everyday lives. However, their attention spans are becoming shorter, affecting their experience at the park. This is due to the usage of mobile phones while in the park—while 72% of visitors indicate that they use their phone regularly during their visit to theme parks, only 19% indicated that their phones enhanced their experience.

The two most common uses of mobile phones during theme park visits are for navigation and taking pictures, but 40% of respondents said that they also utilized these devices for external content such as social media, email and internet browsing while waiting in long lines or in between experiences, taking them away from the worlds and stories they’ve come to experience at the world’s most immersive theme parks.

“Mobile phones play a crucial role in creating a safe and streamlined experience in many parks, as well as providing entertainment in downtimes. While they help cure boredom, phones are killing immersion – and the challenge for the industry is to help guests find a happy balance between the two,” says Katapult’s insights director Robbie Jones.
