According to the U.S. Census Bureau, data shows that cities in the South and West regions of the United States had the most growth from July 2020 to July 2021. Out of the 15 fastest-growing cities, 7 of them were in the South, and 8 of them were in the West. These two regions also contained the top 15 cities with the largest numeric gains. And while the top 15 most populous cities remained the same, over half saw notable decreases in population during this timeframe.

Some other key findings include:

  • Arizona, Texas, Florida, and Idaho all had several places among the 15 fastest-growing cities.
  • Georgetown, Texas has the largest growth at 10.5%, which is a rate of growth that could double the population in under seven years.
  • San Antonio, Texas topped the list of the largest numeric gainers with an increase of 13,626 people between 2020 and 2021.
  • New York City, New York remained the nation’s largest city by far, despite decreasing in population. Los Angeles, California and Chicago, Illinois follow distantly.
