This year is already shaping up to be a monumental one for travel, with some significant trends emerging. American Express Travel recently released its 2024 Global Travel Trends Report, revealing that 84% of respondents are planning to spend the same amount of money, if not more, on travel this year compared to last. Additionally, more than three in four cares primarily about having the right travel experience than about the cost of the trip itself.

As for what’s driving the continued surge in travel demand, American Express identifies four notable trends.

  1. Traveling for Sporting Events. Nearly six in ten respondents indicated that they are interested in traveling for a sporting event this year (67% among Gen Z and Millennials specifically). These travelers will likely attend an event more than three hours away from home, with soccer, basketball and Formula One racing being the most popular events.
  2. Making Travel a Priority. Nearly three in four respondents indicated that they would rather save money for a major trip than regularly spend money on going out with friends.
  3. Traveling Solo. While 69% of overall respondents plan to take a solo trip this year, this trend is especially popular among younger travelers. Motivation for this kind of travel is predominantly for self-love and treating oneself.
  4. Traveling on a Whim. The idea of spontaneous trips appeals to 78% of respondents, with two in three indicating they like to leave unplanned time during their trips to experience local culture and activities.
