Quiet Vacationing Over PTO

One of the hottest trends this summer among hybrid and remote employees (one in eight employees) is quiet vacationing. That is, employees are taking vacation days without informing their employer, continuing to work from a vacation destination.

Employees aren’t necessarily engaging in quiet vacationing due to lack of PTO days. According to a study conducted by Resume Builder, 30% of employees indicated that they think using their PTO makes them look less hard-working, and 40% thought using too much of their PTO might impact their job security.

Company culture may be feeding into this perception, says Tiffany Slater, founder of St. Louis-based virtual HR services company HR TailorMade. “We will have a vacation and our PTO policy, but because there’s so much work that needs to get done, it’s almost like you feel guilty taking off,” Slater says. This is especially true when leaders set the tone with long hours and don’t portray time off as valuable.
