Post-Pandemic Spending Spree: 6 Things Americans Are Buying

bottom_blob-1

With each day, more Americans are receiving their COVID-19 vaccinations, and spring temperatures are warming up many parts of the country. Consumers are booking plane trips, hitting the mall or watching a movie in a theater again. The post-pandemic shopping spree has officially begun, with shoppers directing money toward some of the same kinds of purchases and some different ones too.

Here are the top six things that Americans are buying.

  1. Skirts, jumpsuits and dresses. These items are selling out at a higher rate than any other category, with an average monthly sold-out rate of 21% this March (vs. 11% last March).
  2. Jeans. Levi Strauss & Co reports that the industry seems to be in the early innings of a new denim cycle, driven largely by Gen Z.
  3. Champagne. Whether reuniting with family and friends, planning upcoming parties or even snagging an appointment for a vaccine, Americans have more causes for celebration lately and some are popping bottles. Sales rose by 22% in the first three months of this fiscal year compared to last year.
  4. Shoes. Extra activity in a single pair of shoes during quarantine is driving a higher replacement rate – for sneakers especially.
  5. Shaving kits. People, especially men, are starting to think of the outside world and what they want to look like. This has driven the purchases of shaving kits or beard oils the past few months.
  6. Swimsuits. With travel rebounding and many booking trips to the beach or an island resort, it only makes sense that swim suit sales are skyrocketing.
