Independence Day Travel Expected to Near Pre-Pandemic Levels
According to AAA, more than 47.7 million Americans plan to travel over the Independence Day holiday this year (July 1-5). This will be the second-highest Independence Day travel volume on record, trailing only 2019, and by just 2.5%. Despite the highest gas prices in seven years, more than 91% of this holiday travel will be by car (43.6 million). This is the highest record for this holiday, 5% higher than the previous record set in 2019. There is good news for the airline industry too – 3.5 million people plan to fly during the holiday, creating air travel volumes 90% of pre-pandemic levels.
“Travel is in full swing this summer, as Americans eagerly pursue travel opportunities they’ve deferred for the last year-and-a-half,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president, AAA Travel. “We saw strong demand for travel around Memorial Day and the kick-off of summer, and all indications now point to a busy Independence Day to follow.”
