Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison site, recently released a breakout of emerging 2021 travel trends. Squaremouth Analytics conducted a comparison of thousands of travel insurance policies purchased by customers both before and after the pandemic to detect changes in consumer behavior, as well as shifts in insurance coverage as the world heads into the second summer season affected by the pandemic.

Here are some of the trends they discovered:

·       Domestic Travel. Nearly half (48%) of insured trips booked for this summer are domestic, compared to only 19% last summer.

·       Travel Insurance. More travelers are purchasing travel insurance with COVID-19 benefits this year, with 35% of all policy purchases having the “COVID-19” filter applied.

·       ‘Cancel For Any Reason.’ Due to the continued climate of uncertainty, roughly 27% of travelers are springing for the ‘Cancel For Any Reason’ upgrade, as compared to only 19% last year and 8% pre-pandemic.

·       Who’s Traveling. Baby Boomers are the most ready and willing to jump back into travel—accounting for 30% of this summer’s travelers so far, followed by Gen X (24%) and Gen Z (18%). This trend is likely due to their earlier access to the vaccine.
