While it has been clear for months that there has been pent-up demand for travel in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, new data from Google reveals the extent of travelers’ desire to get back out there.

Pent-up demand for travel is greatest among younger generations, representing more than half of all Americans and a whopping $350 billion in spending power. These travelers are seeking comfort (47%), convenience (41%) and good reviews (41%), but they are also seeking out unique experiences that are unique and new to them (43%). Google identified a trio of keywords that are clicking with younger travelers, such as “escape and relax” (52%), “budget friendly” (38%) and “adventurous” (38%).

While younger generations are showing the greatest demand for travel, these travelers are not exclusively ready for travel. Google revealed that searches for “can I travel” increased 800% this month alone, and that terms such as “relaxing” (51%), “stress-free” (41%), “safety” (59%), “flexible” (56%) and “full control” (56%) are resonating with travelers of all generations.
